What to Know

It is a surgical procedure that removes fat from different areas of the body through suction technology. Liposuction does not only remove fats, but contours as well. It is also called lipoplasty.

Liposuction is not a technique that is implemented to lose weight. It only reshapes the body with the removal of fats from certain areas of the body such as the upper arms, face and neck, thighs, hips, abdomen, and more; therefore, creating a better toned look for that body part. Additionally, it can work well if there is a need to remove fat from certain area of the body given that the overall weight is stable. This procedure can be performed on its own or in conjunction with other surgical techniques, such as facelift, thigh-lift, abdominoplasty, and more.

When you gain weight, fat cells grow in size and volume. So, liposuction reduces the amount of fat in these fat cells until the shape is satisfactory. These changes are permanent as long as weight is the same. It should be noted that this procedure does not improve any irregularities, other than fat removal.

It is performed on different body areas, including:

  • Abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Buttocks
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest and back
  • Hips and thighs
  • Chin and neck

In addition, liposuction can sometimes be used for breast reduction or treatment of gynecomastia.
